Exciting news for Johor residents and visitors! Starting January 1, 2025, Johor will officially revert to a Saturday-Sunday weekend rest day, marking a significant shift from the current Friday-Saturday weekend. This decision, announced by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, on October 7, 2024, will impact over 2.5 million residents, including government employees, private sector workers, and students.

Key Announcement

The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, stated:
“With the consent and blessing of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and after considering the views of the Johor Islamic Religious Council, I announce that from January 1, 2025, Johor’s weekend will be Saturday and Sunday.”

While this change has been approved by the Sultan, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and the Johor Mufti will oversee its implementation to ensure a smooth transition. To accommodate Muslim workers, businesses are encouraged to allow sufficient time for Friday prayers.

Who Will Be Affected?

The weekend change will affect approximately:

  • 2.5 million residents
  • 587,343 students
  • 1.94 million employees, spanning both government and private sectors

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz noted that this adjustment is expected to harmonize public and private sector schedules, reduce conflicts, improve family bonding, and enhance economic activities, particularly cross-border trade with Singapore.

Economic Impact and Business Benefits

The change is anticipated to bolster business operations across Johor, especially for those dealing with international partners. Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah praised the decision, highlighting the potential benefits for businesses, particularly cross-border trade with Singapore. Synchronized weekends are expected to boost commercial activities and increase opportunities for collaboration between Johor and its neighboring regions.

A Historical Perspective

Johor’s weekend rest days have undergone several changes over the years:

  • 2014: The state adopted a Friday-Saturday weekend to recognize the importance of Friday for Muslim worship.
  • 1994: Before this, Johor followed a Saturday-Sunday weekend, which was introduced during Muhyiddin Yassin’s time as Chief Minister.

Now, with Johor returning to a Saturday-Sunday weekend, the decision has been well-received by the public, many of whom praise it as a practical and sensible move that aligns with modern business needs and family life.
